Professional Development Training

Manual & People Handling & Refreshers
These courses have been designed specifically for Educators and consider the risk of a range of hazards peculiar only to the early years settings.
The manual handing programme will look at reasons for safe manual handling, risk assessments and how they contribute to overall health and safety in the workplace, the range of equipment and testing requirements and how to apply safe manual handling principles.

The people handing programme deals specifically with the handling of people in the workplace. The focus is on how to minimise handling and lifting including guidance on handling risk and assessment. This course would be of interest to Educators working with infants, toddlers and young children with physical and/or challenging behavioural/intellectual disabilities.

These courses can be delivered as refreshers or under the QQI Accreditation system.

Occupational First Aid (paediatric) & Refreshers
The (paediatric) First Aid Programme is designed to ensure that Educators have the most up to date and practically supported training appropriate to the area of early years. Upon completion of the award, Educators will be able to detail the responsibilities of the First Aider and demonstrate Paediatric First Aid; perform the essential life saving skills of a First Aider; demonstrate CPR and AED methods; assess and respond to an emergency situation appropriately. The course will also cover a variety of other areas of childhood related first aid such as choking, first aid and bleeding, seizures, fractures and soft tissue injuries and burns. This list is not exhaustive.

The course can be taken as a 1 day ‘refresher’ or as a QQI Occupational First Aid Award. Please call for further details

 Health & Safety (TUSLA Requirement Areas: Fire Safety, Accident Prevention, Infection, Prevention & Control)
The programme can be tailored specifically to areas the early years setting requires assistance with. The programme in its entirety focuses on the TUSLA Pre-School Regulations and is 2 days (or equivalent) in duration. The main learning outcomes are:
To encourage in-depth understanding of the Pre-School Regulations and their legislative framework To increase awareness of how each area of regulation is beneficial to Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace and the Early Years Curriculum Framework Aistear, and Siolta Quality Standards To provide Educators with the ability to connect activity, resources and environment directly to Pre-School Regulations

Understanding Early Years Curriculum in Practice (Siolta & Aistear)
What is Aistear? What is Siolta?
This a 1 day (equivalent) programme which provides a jargon free straightforward look at both Aistear and Siolta; how they differ, where they connect and their forthcoming migration. More importantly, Educators will complete the course with not only an understanding of each but the ability to relate themes, standards and objectives to their day to day routine.

Safeguarding Children – Understanding Child Protection; Children First & UNCRC; The Role of the Designated Child Protection Officer
We offer a range of courses specifically designed for the early years settings; based on areas of need and targeted at the role, responsibilities and position of the Educator. These range from 3 hour introductory sessions to 3 day (equivalent) programmes. This is a popular childcare training course in Dublin that we offer.
Please call for details.

Observations, Assessments & Next Steps
What is the difference between an observation and an assessment? How do I evaluate and action my findings?

This 1 day short course is aimed at Educators who have to integrate regular observation, assessment and planning into their already busy schedule. It aims to focus the Educators attention to making meaningful observations, ensuring that they (the Educator) are well placed to plan and provide for the young child’s individual needs and interests and how to capture these within the process. Knowing when and how to undertake an observation or assessment, how to evaluate the findings and when to share and reflect appropriately with colleagues and parents is often the key challenge. Educators will be shown how to use excellent examples of National Practice Models (UK) as well as the Aistear Observational Tool to acquire valuable and meaningful information from observations and assessments which will, in turn, be helpful in identifying real concerns, particularly about young children who are perceived to be in more complex situations.

  QUALITY IN PRACTICE COURSES

Play & Creativity in the Curriculum

Delivered as either a full day workshop or split across 2 sessions, this short course focuses on developing young children’s creativity through play.  Educators will acquire an understanding of what defines creativity in learning, the ‘real’ imagination and how to come up with new ideas and play activities that are unusual yet beneficial to learning, development and wellbeing while complementing both the Aistear Curriculum Framework and the settings own curricula in action. Educators will complete the course with a deeper understanding of how to identify creativity in young children, explore how a child's creativity can be affected by socio-economics, ethnicity, gender and disability while considering the significance of their own role in the process.

Eyes on Bullying - Bullying Prevention in Early Childhood Settings
Learning how to get along with others is one of life’s most important challenges. In early years settings young children experience many twists and turns in their social interactions.  This is often where they observe or experience their first forms of conflict.
This short course ( 1 day or 2 sessions) provides Educators with the skills to recognise the early signs of conflict, how to distinguish between conflict and bullying and effective strategies to prevent bullying from evolving. Within this, areas of focus will include;
Supporting the child to use their own resources and skills Teaching social problem-solving skills How to create a ‘safe’ environment to help children understand and deal with their own feelings, anticipate consequences and think of solutions Encourage impulse control, self-calming and listening skills

‘Spaces & Places’ – Understanding the importance of the physical environment
How does the physical early years environment influence young children’s experiences of the world and their opportunities for overall learning and development?
Why are early years environments important and exactly how do they contribute to children’s experiences?

This 1 day seminar challenges the early years Educator to consider how the organisation of the setting and the resources within it can influence young children’s interactions and development. Educators will discuss the use of space, how both indoor and outdoor space may be viewed by the ‘child’, and exactly why early years settings need to create spaces where children can be explorative, risk-taking and challenged in their every day learning.

Promoting Positive Behaviour in the Early Years Setting
This is an 1 day workshop providing Educators with the opportunity to understand the importance of promoting positive behaviour in children through the early years and the role positive behaviour strategies during these stages of development can play in a child’s future development. Learning outcomes will include (but are not exhaustive);
Increase Educators understanding of young children’s feelings and how thoughts and feelings affect behaviour Enhanced ability to adopt and apply a range of positive behaviour strategies appropriate to ages and stages of development as well as situations Encouraging Educators to explore their circumstances and how they impact upon their thoughts, feelings and behaviours within the early years setting

  Understanding Attachment Theory
A 6 hour programme designed to increase the Educators understanding of attachment theory and in doing so, enable the application of attachment theory to practice, particularly when assessing and planning to meet the needs of young children.  Learning outcomes include (but are not exhaustive);
Describe attachment theory and the development of attachment Understand how early life experiences can create specific styles of attachment in future relationships Use an attachment perspective to enhance Educator-child-parent relationships Apply attachment theory to observation and assessment in early years care planning
This programme can be delivered as a full day course or split in 2 half-day sessions

Using Mindfulness in Early Years Education (Childcare Training)
Research demonstrates that by integrating some of the most basic principles of mindfulness into the every day routine in the early years setting, young children's emotional wellbeing, resilience and relationship quality benefits. Mindfulness can improve their ability to pay attention, to ‘pause’ and calm while also helping with cognitive development. This short 3 hour programme will provide Educators with the understanding, knowledge and tools they require to put mindfulness at the heart of their teaching quality and practice.
